Neuroimaging can be used to gather a wide range of information about processes in the human brain. This status report provides information on the basic principles and possible applications of neuroimaging techniques in the neurosciences, highlights relevant legal norms and regulations, and discusses the ethical challenges that arise with regard to the use of imaging techniques in the context of medical treatment and clinical research as well as in the context of criminal law.
Particular attention is paid to the risk-benefit balance, the autonomy of patients, the protection of their privacy, and more general considerations of justice in clinical research.
