The eleventh of the biennial treaty conferences ("Conferences of the Parties", COP) safeguarding the implementation of the UN "Convention on Biological Diversity" was held in October 2012 in Hyderabad, India. Among the core issues that were discussed were the state of the Nagoya protocol issued at the COP 10 which aims at regulating the access to genetic resources and benefit sharing as well as the progress made in the execution of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020, the worldwide restoration of ecosystems, the fostering of marine and coastal biodiversity and the correlation between biodiversity and climate change. Furthermore, various logistical, organisational and financial matters were debated.

Regarding the internationally authorised "Aichi Biodiversity Targets" whose pursuit and implementation is expounded in the Strategic Plan 2011-2020, the participating industrial nations have agreed upon a duplication of the budget for the advancement of developing countries' capacities to enforce the goals. In addition, the Sargasso Sea, the archipelago of Tonga and the coral reefs off the coast of Brazil were identified among others as marine areas particularly worthy of protection and fostering in the coming years. In order to be better able to incorporate the current state of biodiversity in large-scale environmental analyses, new measuring standards and methods were established and, conclusively, the participating parties resolved upon a strengthened coordination between national strategies of biodiversity and a furtherance of the COP's cooperation with the "Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES)".
