Technological and Normative Transformation in Society: Smart Bioeconomy and Sustainability
8th International BioSC Symposium ‘Bioeconomy and sustainability’
LVR-LandesMuseum Bonn
27-28 January 2025

With our BMBF-funded project PRACC, we participated in the 8th International BioSC Symposium ‘Bioeconomy and sustainability’, which ended at the LVR-LandesMuseum Bonn on 28 January 2025 after two exciting days with interesting presentations, poster sessions, panel discussions and networking opportunities in the field of bioeconomy. It was organised perfectly by the Bioeconomy Science Center (BioSC).
The contributions at the symposium with early career and senior researchers fit perfectly with the aims of PRACC: to develop an ethical and legal framework for an appropriate way for society to deal with the consequences of climate change, based on the fundamental concepts of intergenerational justice and freedom.
The symposium made clear that we need not only excellent science and good technologies, but also creativity in politics and positive vibrations of people!
Prof. Dr. Ulrich Schurr (FZ Jülich) and Thorsten Menne (Ministry for Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia) opened the symposium.
In the presence of Dr. Dr. h.c. Christian Patermann, the BioSC’s Christian Patermann Award 2024 was dedicated to Benedikt Wynands (FZ Jülich) for his outstanding interdisciplinary supervision of PhD students in the field of bioeconomy.
Dr. Axel Berger (German Institute of Development and Sustainability) gave a lecture on ‘Accelerating the implementation of the SDGs in a (geo)politicized world’ and Prof. Dr. Maximilian Weigend (Bonn Institute for Organismic Biology, University of Bonn) spoke about ‘Feeding on landscapes - natural landscapes, naturalesque landscapes and humanscapes’.
Prof. Dirk Lanzerath gave an introduction on the ethics of ‘Controversial sustainability perspectives of the generations’ before starting a panel discussion with Prof. Dr. Sandra Venghaus (RWTH Aachen/BioSC), Prof. Dr. Anna von Mikecz (Bioeconomy Council NRW and Vice-Chair of NABU NRW), and Linda Lütkes (Office of the Bioeconomy Council NRW), moderated by Prof. Dr. Ulrich Schurr (FZ Jülich).
Together with Prof. Dr. Ulrich Schurr, Dr. Marius Bartmann (PRACC) honoured two posters with the PRACC Poster Award on the ethical relevance of the bioeconomy. The awards went to Dr. Marcel Mann and Paul Cordero, PhD (both RWTH Aachen). Congratulations!
