Conference of the Parties (COP) 12
The twelfth of the biennial "Conferences of the Parties" (COP) concerned with the implementation of the UN "Convention on Biological Diversity" took place in October 2014 in Pyeongchang, South Korea. As during the preceding conference, the advances, problems and results of the Nagoya protocol on Access and Benefit-sharing as well as the Aichi Biodiversity Targets expounded in the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 were of key importance. Other topics discussed included the strengthening of cooperation with other conventions and NGO's, the progress in the fostering of marine and coastal regions, the chances and risks in synthetic biology for the protection of biodiversity and the respective correlations between biodiversity and climate change, public health, tourism, poverty reduction and sustainable development.
The results of the conference were mainly characterised by a summarising retrospect on the resolutions agreed upon during the previous COPs as well as their execution in the preceding years. The participating states confirmed and endorsed the resolution agreed upon two years earlier at COP 11 to double the financial backing put about by industrial countries for the developing countries' measures of biodiversity protection until 2015 and hold the reached standards until 2020. Additionally, an increase of financial spending to foster biodiversity on the national and regional level was resolved upon. Regarding the "Strategic Plan" and the "Aichi Biodiversity Targets" expounded within it, the progress made so far was summarised and taken as a basis for the "Pyeongchang roadmap for the enhanced implementation of the strategic plan and achievement of the Aichi Biodiversity Targets". The latter establishes decisions on the allocation of resources, capacity building, scientific and technical cooperation in connecting the fostering of biodiversity and poverty reduction, the further attendance to the "Strategic Plan" as well as reinforced support for the implementation of national biodiversity strategies.
